What is action research?

In my opinion, action research refers to a wide variety of evaluative research methods designed to focus on find the practical problem or challenge points in their –teachers- own class and generating solutions quickly and efficiently. And the purpose of undertaking action research are improving students’ language skills, language level and improving teacher’s teaching skill.

Unlike empirical research, action research is taking self-reflective and critical approaches. Also in the action research the teacher becomes an investigator, an explorer, or a researcher of their own research. So subject of research and the problem is generated from the teaching context. Normally in the empirical research, researcher is not the teacher and it is generated outside classroom. Action research typically follows a predefined process – planning, acting, observing and reflecting - at the same time it can be modified among or end of the research. So it is more flexible than empirical research.
